Some 15 yachts participated in the traditional Ocean Cruising Club gathering at Whilton Creek, a branch of the Piankatank River. Scorpio and six other yachts formed a raft, which was the center of the pot luck party of the first night. The others were Merlin, UK, Trumpeter, USA, Havsvind, Sweden, Speedwell, UK, Belouga, UK and Compass Rose, USA. Next evening the cruisers and several shore based OCC members were invited to the home of Alice and Bill Caldwell where we greatly enjoyed their hospitality.

Thereafter we had one night stops in Norfolk, where we again entered the Intracoastal Waterway, and Great Bridge, followed by the marshes north of marker G23, just east of the Alligator River-Pungo River Canal in North Carolina and finally in Taylor’s Creek at Beaufort, also in NC.

Beaufort is one of our favorite stops along the ICW. They have a very interesting Maritime Museum and beautiful historic buildings. The library with its free internet PCs is a short walking distance from the anchorage and the museum even lends cars for two hours at a time without charge! Because of its good all weather inlet Beaufort is a popular jumping off place for distant destinations. This time of the year several boats spend time in the anchorage awaiting a weather window to cross the Golf Stream and head for the Carribean.

After a couple of days of unsettled weather we decided to continue for two more days along the ICW, stopping over night at Mile Hammock Bay and Carolina Beach Harbor, both familiar spots since last year. There we were close to the next good inlet (outlet in our case) to the Atlantic.
